Southern India Adventure through Tamil Nadu with Montessori Tours and Travel
Embarking on a journey to southern India with Montessori Tour and Travel proved to be an outstanding decision that exceeded all my expectations. From the outset, the depth and vibrancy of India were brought to life through the expertise and passion of our local guides, who consistently went above and beyond to showcase the best of their regions. Their enthusiasm resulted in many unexpected surprises and delightful detours, adding even more richness to an already full itinerary.
Puducherry: A Walk Through History A particular highlight was the morning walking tour in Puducherry. Our guide shared fascinating insights into the city’s unique architecture, shaped by various rulers, with notable French and British influences. Demonstrating remarkable local knowledge, he managed to access the back entrance to the St Cluny embroidery workshop and convent, which was closed for a festival holiday. This convent supports women by providing them with opportunities and income for their families. The Diwali festivities added another layer of cultural immersion, with the guide explaining the stories behind statues of influential figures who helped India overcome the caste system and gain independence. This led us to the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, where we learned about Aurobindo’s global influence on Hinduism and yoga. Montessori Tour and Travel also organised a day at Auroville, where a resident guide deepened our understanding of this unique global community and Sri Aurobindo’s philosophies.
The tour was a comprehensive introduction to Indian culture, history, education, and spirituality, emphasising respect for all sentient beings.
Festivals and Rituals India is alive with festivals, each region celebrating Diwali, the full moon, new moon, and their favourite deities in distinctive ways. In Madurai, we experienced more rituals, guided by an award-winning local expert. He provided clear explanations of the vibrant celebrations within the Meenakshi Temple, leading us to prime vantage points for the processions and sharing architectural details, such as the thousand aligned columns and imposing elephant-proof doors. His knowledge made the temple’s history and traditions come alive.
Vanakkam Madurai: Morning Life Unfolds After the late temple visit, we joined our guide early the next morning for the Vanakkam Madurai walking tour. We witnessed the city wake up, enjoying strong south Indian coffee with locals, and observed daily routines such as women creating Kolams at their doorsteps, cows being milked in narrow alleys, and the daily paper delivered by pushbike. The tour showcased both old and new water supply systems and took us through bustling wholesale and retail markets. Despite the crowds, the atmosphere was cheerful and respectful. Memorable moments included receiving a welcoming garland and bindi from an elderly lady and experiencing the soothing sandalwood essence traditionally used for personal hygiene.
Exceptional Care and Authentic Experiences Throughout the journey, attentive care was evident—even in busy areas. We were always safely returned to our driver and accommodation. The guides provided an authentic insight into Indian history, culture, and daily life, sharing not only their knowledge but also their personal beliefs and values. This made the tour exceptionally insightful and memorable.
Hidden Gems and Culinary Delights We visited grand temples, palaces, churches, museums, and mosques, but one off-the-beaten-path temple stood out—a hidden gem, cared for by an elderly woman and a mute man. The guide interpreted the man’s nonverbal communication and explained the temple’s special features, which left a lasting impression. Dining at local cafés was another highlight; the staff were surprised and delighted to serve us, and the food was consistently delicious. Lunch was often enjoyed at luxurious guest houses, each with its own unique history.
Accommodation and Seamless Travel Accommodation throughout the tour was extraordinary. Each place was luxurious and spacious, with its own surprises—shuttered windows and peaceful courtyards at The Bangala, balconies, and breathtaking rooftop views at Palais de Maha, where the atmosphere evoked France. These properties retained their heritage while offering modern comforts. The entire tour was seamlessly organised, with guides and drivers meeting us at airports and accommodation, anticipating and meeting all our needs.
Conclusion Each day of the tour was filled with unexpected delights, history, insights, and delicious food, keeping me in constant amazement. I fell in love not only with India but also with its people and culture, thanks to the exceptional guides who offered genuine insight and hospitality. I look forward to joining another adventure with Montessori Tours and Travel and highly recommend their services. Special thanks to Roelie Hartwig for making this journey unforgettable.
